Gentleman in the snow, well preserved detail on a gravestone in Berwickshire. The symbols either side of him could be flames, a representation of eternal life. Lower down can be seen an hourglass on its side, time is running out, a classic mortality symbol.

This old gravestone gives us two fundamental types of symbol, the upper figure is a winged soul as a symbol of immortality while the lower representation of a skull and crossed bones is a symbol of mortality. Year unknown but could be 18th Century.

Graveyard in a private estate at Strowan, near Crieff, Perthshire. Tombstone of a merchant. Inscription almost illegible but Pevsner guide says it was erected c.1780 by James McIlvride to the memory of his parents, uncle and sisters.

The birlinn is a type of boat used especially in the Hebrides and West Highlands of Scotland in the Middle Ages. This one is carved on a gravestone at Kilbride church, Lerags, Argyll. At the top of the mast there looks to be a beacon or torch. A lit torch represents life, immortality and the everlasting life.
