Vannevar Bush played by Matthew Modine In

In 1944 FDR wrote to Bush, asking how to turn the "unique experiment of team-work and cooperation in coordinating scientific research and in applying existing scientific knowledge" during WWII to the peaceful pursuit of scientific knowledge after the end of the war.

Bush replied in to President Harry Truman in July 1945, the month of Trinity and ‘As We May Think’ publication in The Atlantic Monthly.

@harrymccracken 🧵Thanks for posting this original draft Time story on Evernote. The evanescence of online sources is a terrible challenge.

“Evernote will only fulfill its [100 year] mission if it’s around for the long haul. If you invite users to think of your service as an extension of their brains, you’re telling them that the data they salt away will be there when they need it — whether that moment comes in two weeks or twenty years.”

Today is Tiny Memex No. 6 of 25! It's fun to return to this project after a few years away, mostly caused by the RPi shortage.

I gave 's another try but it still doesn't feel right for me. imho, it feels like the browser extension is trying to do too much heavy lifting and that a local native application or a hosted SaaS solution is required.

For example, I tried importing my Diigo library into Memex and it was progressing at a snail's pace (it did seem to pull in highlights, but I'm unsure about annotations and didn't seem to pull tags).

I'm sure I'll run out of soon 😂

Curious what folks are using for highlighting and ? I've been using for many years (10? 15?) and occasionally look for alternatives.

I use which offers some of the same functionality, I'm aware of but appears a bit more limited than I'd like.

I've tried WorldBrain's in the past but it was never quite where I wanted and now appears to be pivoting.

Ideal solution is, of course, . 😃

I really, REALLY wanted to love 's tool. I think someday it _will_ be worth loving but the more i've used it the more _significant_ pieces of broken functionality i've found.

this morning I went to annotate + bookmark something and it's just spinning at me. This thing is local first so, it theoretically wouldn't matter if their sync servers (which don't work) are down.

I guess I'm done experimenting with it.

The search workflow is the most distracting, annoying and exhausting thing in knowledge work. Searching for information costs knowledge workers 1 week of lost productivity per month. Making search engines faster & more accurate makes no difference. Knowledge should instead come to us in our workflow as we may think. It's a HCI design problem.

@attacus great thread and very relevant thoughts. I got into software development precisely because of this as yet unsolved problem. I personally use . It's flexible and embraces many and inspired paradigms including transclusions, plus it's open to hacking and customization. I'm trying to look into ways to integrate it into different workflows via my own project oneplaybook.app. Here's an example of it in action: abesamma.github.io

That said! Knowledgeable people: tell me about your workflows and why they work for you! Link me to articles and resources that dig deeper into these issues so I can lose myself in reading more about it!

A heads up for anyone wanting to read about the pre-computer history of library science: some of it gets extremely eugenics-y extremely quickly, because old white guys, high on colonialism, who liked to classify things, *especially* loved to do that to human beings. Tread with caution.
