System degradation - The Darling River
"The suffocation of up to 30 million fish in western NSW has been described by a scientist as a "canary in the coal mine" for a sick river environment. NSW deputy chief scientist Darren Saunders said the fish deaths were symptomatic of a larger problem.
"The fish are a canary in the coal mine"
"What we found is there's a much broader degradation in the ecosystem in the Darling Baarka. But essentially the environment is sick, the fish are essentially an indicator."

@ronnisalt Love Gerg's work and been following him on Twitter for years... But can't read this thread because #Twitter has locked me out due to the current two-factor authentication bollocks; which is really #Musk's way of FORCING folks to cough up $$ for the blue tick.
Well, fuck that.
If someone could report Gerg's thread here on #Mastodon, I would really appreciate that.
Have been out to #Menindee in both dry and wet times and was planning to go again, shortly. So sorry to see yet *another* mass fish kill.
That area is truly one of #Australia's treasures - awe-inspiring beauty and incredible wildlife... and yet it is treated *so* shabbily.

The fish in Menindee have died
Now abundant and rancid, eyes have cried
The clean-up will soon start
Money and time, depart
But these stinky fish must be denied

This is what a lack of oxygen looks like - a million fish died. Industrial civilisation is currently destroying the trees and microalgae which allow us all to breathe. Think about that. #Menindee via Graeme McCrabb.
“The smell is just next level.”
A climate change-induced heatwave causes the death of millions of fish near Menindee in NSW. A wall of fish is making its way downstream and it's so big there's not much anyone can do about it.
The #Menindee #Lakes are part of the Murray-Darling #Basin – the largest basin in #Australia, spanning one-seventh of the continent. 2.2 million people live across its area, and its surface water supplies about 40 per cent of Australia’s irrigated #agricultural output.
