Anyone out there getting started in tech - paid or voluntary - and looking for a mentor?

Someone whose brains you can pick about stuff that affects your participation in tech, whether professional or personal. Someone who's seen some shit, and is socially liberal (but also 'all corporations must die' far-left economically).

A more general note about advice:

If advice is stressing you out, A) it's probably not meant for you, B) it's likely overly-broad or overly-specific, C) it's very possibly loaded with privilege blindness & survivor bias, and D) you don't have to internalize it or feel held back by it!

1. Communicate as clearly as you can about re/scheduling.
2. Thank you notes are rare so they stand out.
3. Don't treat me like a vending machine of career advancement -- don't show up to take take take all the time.
4. Stay in touch & share good news with me!
5. Realize we will quickly be peers. You can open doors for me, too!
6. Give back. Mentor others when you can & let me know about it.

A friend told me this week about two film directors who started out really small, and whose films were unlikely to get them very far - but they're in Marvel films and literary epics now..

so many times along the way, trying to learn to make my own #Music was such a difficult bar to leap

without the #Mentors i found along the way, i would've stayed down when i fell down

because i had nothing else but the NEED to make music and those mentors at all

if i hadn't had THEM helping me, teaching me, pushing me, and encouraging me.. sometimes literally just BEING there.. i don't know that i'd even still be on this side of the dirt.

Throughout life, I was surrounded by #musicians but always too scared to ask for their help or time. And I didn't have any #instruments to ask them to teach me to play.

I had to approach #music from MIDI, accessed in a video game.

My #mentors were sometimes.. kids who had music education, or strangers online

Until I enrolled in a community college program, I had no access to #MusicTraining since elementary school

The topic today is about #mentors and #MusicMentorship

Personally, music affinity was found early; a topic I shared with my older brother - but we didn't have time with each other to explore that growing up because of the age difference.

I had some access to music at school and a bad piano teacher experience.. mentorship came to me in my late 30's.

Did you find music guidance outside of your family?

#teachers #tutors and #mentors needed for a project to help support #trans youth who aren't safe in their schools: I'm starting a #discord server to provide academic support to #lgbtq #LGBTQIA students. Some of these students may be #homeschool kids, some may be in #PublicSchool in unsafe areas. Please DM or reply to this post for more info!
