I don't like to hardline or pick sides on #politics, but lately I've been thinking...

#Democracy and #Anarchy may be the only two truly legitimate #systems of #government: either power comes directly from the will of the people, or there is no power at all.

I feel like there might be room to discuss #technocracy / #meritocracy in there, or #Heinlein-esque rules about who gets to vote, but I just can't see the arguments for #monarchy / #dictatorship / #SingleParty being valid.

Surprising nobody, if you are rich, you are significantly more likely to get in elite schools. If you are very poor, you have an extremely slight advantage. If you are between very poor and very rich.... tough luck kid, roll the dice better next time. Somebody has to pay the price for other people's advantages.

I really hope stats like these really put to bed the notion that getting into elite schools are even remotely close to meritocracy.

it might sound like whinging but i think this is one of the main reasons why a mono-polar approach to #meritocracy is so insidious: not everyone has the same abilities, and to prioritise productivity or similar outcomes above all else - eg a person's ability to do what they consider meaningful work in a way that allows them to pay bills, maintain shelter etc - is to insist that everyone work to a baseline well above the lowest common denominator, and reward those who for whatever reason are the most productive, or at least are seen to be. it's the old joke about the old timers in a job telling the young whippersnapper not to work so hard or they'll raise expectations for everyone else to work that hard. it's a system designed to reward people who either have gifts they came by through birth, or who flog themselves to outshine others. (am i worried a coworker is trying to eat my lunch? maybe.)

i'm very good at my job but maybe being less than thrilled with working in a for-profit business (because can't pay mortgage otherwise) has left me a bit jaded and not esp motivated to work for free.

So when I say the American Devolution is well under way, the #SCOTUS decisions last week merely reflect this reality. Even the miserly, inchworm kind of progress on systemic racism and gaping class inequalities is too much in a nation full of “it’s a white man’s country” men and “pick me, pick me!” foot-soldiers-of-the-racial-patriarchy women. #AffirmativeAction #StudentLoanForgiveness #Meritocracy #AmericanDream #SocialMobility #HigherEducation

I know firsthand students getting denied admission in Ivy Leagues being of certain ethnicity. They use affirmative action to actually discriminate. It may not sound palatable to modern day Democrats, but as a hyper #liberal myself, I think the policy as implemented is deeply flawed and has done great deal of injustice to a lot of talented students.

America is nothing without #meritocracy.

The #SupremeCourt has ruled that if you’ve overcome systemic adversity and oppression built into your society and the education system to achieve something great, that doesn’t matter, the white guy who skated by his whole life on easy mode gets to step right ahead of you.

#Meritocracy isn’t about judging people based solely on the _outcome_ of their work, it’s about considering their situation and what they had to _overcome_ to achieve that outcome.

Twitter's BlockTheBlue thing has taken another weird twist: some people who had their blue ticks removed for not paying the subscription ransom have had their ticks returned. Many of these people with high principles have been vocal opponents of paid ticks and supporters of the BlockTheBlue movement. To me, this appears to be Twitter's management telling users they can't BlockTheBlue without hurting people they care about. In other words, Twitter's new owner is treating accounts with merit ticks as human shields. TechBros like to talk about meritocracy, but they also think they should be able to simply buy a tick that signifies merit.
