When US President Kennedy dared the United States, “before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to Earth,” #NASA was given expanded facilities occupying almost all of #MerrittIsland, which was a #swamp at the time. It took years of effort, and even more years of person-hour labor, to eradicate the #mosquitoes (and the #YellowFever) to complete the #ApolloProgram and send two men to the Moon and returned both and their rideshare safely to the #Earth.
When the #SpaceShuttle followed on, it continued to launch from the world’s most advanced #spaceport. And it landed there, as #Endeavour did after STS-134.
#SLS and #Orion will again send humans to the Moon from that spaceport.
Which is in a #marsh. Also, it’s infested with #alligators.

#Teals feed by diving their heads underwater, sometimes leaving their tails and legs kicking above the water, as they eat the underwater vegetation and small mollusks.

Operated by the #DepartmentOfTheInterior as a #WildlifeRefuge. This #photo was taken from #PlayalindaBeach in the Cape Canaveral National Seashore #CCNS, where a mile’s hike on the beach can bring you directly against the decrepit wire fence that marks the boundary between the parts of #MerrittIsland open to the public, and #NASA’s Kennedy Space Center’s #KSC operational area.
The perspective in this image makes one of those fraying wires seem like an obstacle to the #rocket approaching from below.

#Playalinda #beach is perfect for #photographing #rocket launches, especially #AtlasV or #Falcon9 #launches.
There are multiple parking lots and boardwalk access to the #beach from Cape Canaveral National Seashore. From there, it is about a mile’s hike to the fence between #CCNS and #KSC / Kennedy Space Center. After the #launch (or #scrub), it’s another mile back to the boardwalk, on sand, carrying #photography gear.
But the launch is often worth it (few places you can *feel* the #sound of the engines), and sometimes the #view on the way back, looking over #MerrittIsland and #MINWR, is worth it too.
