I love the concept of apps like Briar ( @briarapp ), Meshenger and FireChat (discontinued). The idea of being independant of a cellular network for me feels like something everyone should get behind. Its a real pitty they are not mainstream enough to get adoption. I guess we need a twitter/reddit fiasco in the chatapp world (or a network failure) to force a new adoption

I think after I try implementing coded PHY support, I'm going to move on to trying to run I2P on top, and then see if I can make bitcoind and lnd gossip over mesh but transact over I2P.

I’ve been a fan of UI until recently. The software quality of the UDM and APs has been a bit average. Frankly the simple mesh system we have at Location 2 has performed better.

I’m pondering a shift to PFSense at the gateway/router and a specific wifi setup, maybe Aruba. I have Ethernet to wall sockets currently so PoE APs get preference.

We have a terrible house for signal, metal in walls and thick. So there are 6 APs to get signal to everywhere including external security devices.

I'm Aaron/ansuz. Most people know me as a him but I'm ok with any pronouns.

Earlier in my life I was a multi-instrumentalist musician. I branched out of #jazz into #procgen (procedural generation) and self-organization, which slowly exposed me into the worlds of #p2p, #meshnetworks, and #cryptography.

I dropped out of a #cognitivescience degree at the university of Toronto in 2014 and have been a professional software developer since. I'm currently one of the privacy researchers developing @cryptpad. Beyond privacy-enhancing tech I have a deep interest in multi-party and provably fair computation, particularly their applications in game design.

I was born in so-called-Canada but haven't been a resident since 2015, when I moved to France (where I eventually met my spouse - a neuroscientist and advocate of academic reform). Reading up about #meshtastic and #LoRaWAN and I just find the idea of mesh networks really cool (r.i.p pagers)

I just wonder; if they built these transceivers into every smartphone, would we even need cell companies? Surely there are enough devices that you would have near global coverage by treating each device as a node? Not sure how it would work for voice and internet, but I think its cool that there are systems that don't need to rely on cell companies' infrastructure.
