Wished Mastodon had a better DM. There are some people I want to keep chatting 1:1 but I don't feel connected enough to give them my number.

After iOS, Element X beta is now available on Android. Go rush it, break the app, report bugs, let's all get fun together! Oh, and it's extremely fast, don't be surprised.

"Die sozialen Medien sind tot - Gruppenchats und Messaging Apps sind Schuld"

Die DMs auf , Gruppenfunktion, ect. helfen Nutzer*innen dabei ihre AktivitƤten immer weiter in kleinere soziale Gruppen zu verschieben, im Gegensatz zu frĆ¼her, wo viele offen alles auf z.B. geteilt haben.

: "Is Signal using Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

Signal does use one small machine learning model which is actually part of our media editing suite of tools. It allows people to click a button to automatically makes faces unrecognizable in a photo; it runs locally on your phone. For example, if you take a photo of a party where you donā€™t know everyone, and you donā€™t have consent to share facial biometric data, you can click a button and this model will help you recognize faces and blur them so you can ensure privacy. Thatā€™s a nice and useful application of AI and it doesnā€™t send data to an app company.

What, then, is the problem with AI?

When AI systems are used, they are usually used for surveillance. They profile peopleā€™s faces and create data about whose face that is or what kind of person that face indicates. Itā€™s used for ratings or for other purposes, which are surveillance in themselves. To create these AI systems, you first have to have huge amounts of data to train and inform those systems so they can be calibrated. The metastasis of AI as a kind of dominant and very hyped form of technology is antithetical to ensuring real privacy. It entrenches and expands the business model of surveillance, because its insatiable demand for data will naturally lead to more surveillance, more collection and generation of data."

The YOLO Message-Driven architecture became a standard way of doing Messaging and is pretty straight forward to follow. Yet it does not follow the basics rules of Messaging

So I have been debating whether or not to actually set up for messaging because of the aspect. Then I realized that those platforms that it wants to unify are ones I don't ever message important things on, minus signal which I didn't set up, so why not be able to unify all of the messaging apps that other people use to try to contact me. If you want a code to try Beeper message me here or on telegram @SivilianOnBace.

: "A fake version of the private messaging app Signal has found a way onto Google Play and appears to be linked to a Chinese spy operation, researchers claimed on Wednesday.

The hackers, dubbed by researchers at cybersecurity company ESET as GREF, also released a version on Samsungā€™s Galaxy Store. The main aim of the fake Signal, which was called Signal Plus Messenger and functioned the same as the legitimate version, is to spy on communications of the real app, according to ESET researcher Lukas Stefanko.

The standard version of Signal allows users to link the mobile app to their desktop or Apple iPad. The malicious Signal Plus Messenger abused that feature by automatically connecting the compromised device to the attackerā€™s Signal in the background, so all messages were passed onto their account"

: "With end-to-end encrypted technology, no one but you and the intended recipients can know what you wrote or said ā€” not hackers, the app companies or the police.

Except, not everything is end-to-end encrypted in end-to-end encrypted apps.

That could mean what you type in chats are saved on company computers that corporations such as Apple or your phone provider could read. Details such as the timestamps of every text to your boyfriend might not be under lock and key, either.
Thatā€™s not necessarily bad. Each end-to-end encryption choice has trade-offs. More privacy and security could also make it harder for you to use an app, or can shield activity of terrorists and child predators.

The mess Iā€™m describing ā€” end-to-end encryption but with certain exceptions ā€” may be a healthy balance of your privacy and our safety.

The problem is itā€™s confusing to know what is encrypted and secret in communications apps, what is not and why it might matter to you.

To illuminate the nuances, I broke down five questions about end-to-end encryption for five communications apps."

EU roaming is pretty awesome! But the thing is hardly anybody wants to receive SMS messages with emergency services and other roaming info bullshit when crossing to neighboring country over and over.
Last time I crossed a nearby border I received 3 (!) useless messages on:
1) Emergency services
2) Embassy info
3) Roaming charges

: "The main criticism of the legislation to date has been on freedom of expression grounds. Critics have said it will have a chilling effect, encouraging tech giants to ban users who might get the platforms into trouble with the regulators. Now the companies are warning that the bill has a national security implication too.

Ukraine often uses messaging services to communicate securely with its allies, including the UK. The British armed forces and their allies also use services such as Signal alongside military communications systems. Do ministers really want to weaken western security? Have they thought this through?

If Signal and WhatsApp cannot be used on British-registered phones, anyone who needs access will presumably have to ship in a second, secure device from the US."

Element X iOS and Android nightlies have started to integrate the Matrix Rich Text Editor, github.com/matrix-org/matrix-r.

Itā€™s a rich text editor (WYSIWYG) written in Rust with bindings for Swift, Kotlin and JavaScript.

Iā€™ve personally improved WebAssembly support and Markdown support, github.com/matrix-org/matrix-r. Notably this fun patch that has reduced the Wasm module size by 76%, github.com/matrix-org/matrix-r šŸ˜œ.

Element X iOS nightly has a new way to render the Timeline. It is impressively fast, with smooth animations, less code and less bugs. What else :-)?

Patch in Element X iOS, github.com/vector-im/element-x.

The `Timeline` is an API of `matrix_sdk_ui`, github.com/matrix-org/matrix-r.
