These Toots Were Made for Walkin’

So it seems #Mastodon and the #Fediverse are as prone to "Discourse of the Week" syndrome as Twitter was, where an idea takes hold and everybody falls in line, presenting their original thoughts which all lead to that same conclusion.
This week's hot take is "#Meta are going to subsume Fedi and turn it into Google Reader and then we're all fucked, we need to rally the troops, elect a general, take action!"
And the original idea is stupid. Reader wasn't RSS, it was a single implementation, an aggregation service that consumed RSS feeds. And then they killed it when they couldn't monetize it. But RSS survived!
Podcasts, at their core, are RSS feeds, despite the best efforts of Spotify. Nobody rallied to the defense of RSS, it just stayed there. Microsoft Exchange couldn't kill SMTP or IMAP or POP3, and Google couldn't kill RSS or HTTP or JPG, no matter how hard they tried.
Meta didn't kill TikTok, they didn't kill Snapchat, and they won't kill ActivityPub. The worst they might do is persuade the general masses (who already aren't using Mastodon) not to use Mastodon, that it's not good or something. The second worst they can do is to join the Fediverse, use their market domination to become the largest instance, and then pull a Gates-era Microsoft, slowly introducing changes that all other instances will have to work hard to keep up with, to maintain connectivity with the dominant market player, until they've eroded the characteristics that are hostile to monetization and centralization (both technical and social) and replaced them with something that better serves Meta's interests. But that strategy would be doomed because there's no cash flow here. If #Metadon (I just made that up, I'm sure I'm not the first, feel free to use it) doesn't integrate well, instances will simply ignore it. Nobody has anything to lose because the only reason to chase to high user counts is ego.

#Meta (Facebook) considering a #Mastodon-interoperable Twitter competitor. #Metadon
“...the MVP (minimum viable product) will definitely allow our users to broadcast posts to people on other servers. It may or may not enable our users to follow and view the content of people on other servers,”
So their users would broadcast across the fediverse, but only see other Meta users. Are they trying to implement Elon's blue tick on Mastodon?

Opiater och opioider i Sverige
Opiater och opioider används av mycket få brukare och missbrukare i Sverige. Det är den minst använda typen av narkotika. Samtidigt orsakas de flesta narkotikarelaterade dödsfall av opiater och opioider.

What are these little #badges I see over people’s profile pics here on Mastodon? Sure, some look like verification-style icons, but I see all sorts of emoji and other seemingly custom badges on some folks.
"Meta" is too general. Could be meta about all sorts of things. Could be the company formerly known as Facebook. Plus, #Metadon is right there.
This "< Back" button keeps tripping me up and closing the site. Is there a way to disable it? #metadon
I need to follow more hashtags, it's a great way of finding new people and content. #metadon
I wish I could half-mute a user. There are some people who I like following, but I don't need to see every single boost toot. It might be a nice way to filter content without an algorithm.
I hesitate to mute specific hashtags because sometimes I want to hear about those topics when it's important/relevant.

I'm okay without having the equivalent of a Quote Tweet here, but I really do wish I could "Boost with added hashtags" or "Boost with added CW". I really don't want to boost war news without a CW, but also it doesn't seem like journalists are using the CW features yet. #metadon
@eniko Personally, I would rather see less emphasis on choosing an instance and just make it about following people and hashtags to bring content into your timeline.
Every Mastodon explainer seems to start with "look for a server based on your interests" and I think that's off to a bad start. My ISP, e-mail provider, web host, etc., are not neighborhoods. They are part of a network where the service provider is not the focus.

Since my local admin warned me not to mention politics without a CW I tend to CW everything now. I saw some advice somewhere to treat CW as one would a Subject line in email.
