High time to actually start using this site. Feels a bit like shouting into a giant void, but that sort of goes for every social media site, I guess?

I'll be starting as a postdoc at The Museum of Cultural History in Oslo, in September, as part of the #CULTcrime research network. I dug this up yesterday in Kent, England while #metaldetecting . It's called a crotal bell. They were used on cattle and horses to let you know they were coming near. While they are not rare, it's not often that one is found in good condition and the original shape. I have cleaned it up. The last time someone heard this sound would have been the latest in 1600's. Now you can hear it too. ♥️

I am really looking forward to metal detecting near Stonehenge but something occurred to me: I was hoping to find ancient artifacts, but if this lot has been there then to the artifacts you can add ring pulls, bottle caps and foil wraps. FML

Two old pennies found in ‘Field 2’ yesterday

‘Rough’ corrosion removed by very gently rubbing with a soft 6B pencil (so the patina which contains all the detail isn’t damaged) then preserved by ‘deep-frying’ in candle wax.
