I've got this razor that I really like. It's a Gillette open comb safety razor from the 1920s. It's made of brass and I was wondering if anyone knew if commercial brass from the early 20th century had lead in it. I'd hate to poison myself shaving.

DEMAG gas blower machine at Völklingen Ironworks (Völklinger Hütte), in June.

If I recall and understand correctly, these machines were powered by exhaust gases from the blast furnaces that were burned to generate even more heat, and these machines then used the heat to generate hot air to be compressed and blown into the blast furnace. A partially self-driven process, or whatever one could call it? Any engineers around to help?

Industrial Revolution iron method ‘was taken from Jamaica by Briton’ - Wrought iron process that drove UK success was appropriated from black metallurgists, records suggest"

"An innovation that propelled Britain to become the world’s leading iron exporter during the Industrial Revolution was appropriated from an 18th-century Jamaican foundry, historical records suggest.

The Cort process, which allowed wrought iron to be mass-produced from scrap iron for the first time, has long been attributed to the British financier turned ironmaster Henry Cort ... Now, an analysis of correspondence, shipping records and contemporary newspaper reports reveals the innovation was first developed by 76 black Jamaican metallurgists at an ironworks near Morant Bay, Jamaica. Many of these metalworkers were enslaved people trafficked from west and central Africa, which had thriving iron-working industries at the time.

Dr Jenny Bulstrode, a lecturer in history of science and technology at University College London (UCL) and author of the paper, said: “This innovation kicks off Britain as a major iron producer and … was one of the most important innovations in the making of the modern world.”

Counterintuitive tidbit for you: cast iron has more carbon than carbon steel and carbon steel has more iron than cast iron.

I'm a sucker for etc. Particularly of interest is early and the development of steel technology. This article claims that hardened steel tools were being used in the Iberian peninsula (Spain/Portugal) 2900 years ago at the end of the Bronze Age. That's almost 2000 years before Ulfbehrt swords for example. phys.org/news/2023-02-steel-eu

Riddle 120

My separate parts are often found
In disparate places underground,
And so arose the need for trade
To forge a sword, a simple spade,
Or helms like those in Homer’s song.
Brittle and soft alone, but strong
When formed together in the flame—
An age of history has my name.

Google is the language police. I was forced to complete a captcha identifying US traffic lights to google a common metallurgy term because it's a "violation of the Terms of Service". I'm probably on a watchlist now, lmao.

I searched for [placename] copper slag and instead received a captcha with the message "Our systems have detected unusual traffic from your computer network. This page checks to see if it's really you sending the requests, and not a robot." Which implies that google gets a significant quantity of malicious traffic asking for copper slag, lol: "This page appears when Google automatically detects requests coming from your computer network which appear to be in violation of the Terms of Service. The block will expire shortly after those requests stop. In the meantime, solving the above CAPTCHA will let you continue to use our services. [etc.]"
