Some on Earth is older than our solar-system; these pre-solar grains are found in some chondritic meteorites. Oxygen isotopes reveal that they formed in the puffed-off atmospheres of old red-giant stars. From Frisch et al. 2005.

Mag -4.2 Perseid, blew up over mid-Wales, probably near Shrewsbury - which by a coincidence is where at least one other fireball occured in the last year! Someone doesn't like the welsh marches... 🙂

The always peak around August 11, 12 and 13, right before a new moon. Under a dark sky with no moon, skywatchers frequently report 90 meteors per hour, or more. Few – if any – in annual showers hot the ground to become . The parent responsible for the Perseid shower is a rather large comet called 109P/Swift-Tuttle. The comet orbits the sun approximately every 133 years.

Earth’s continents were not formed by volcanic eruptions but by meteorites that bombarded the planet billions of years ago. This is the surprising finding of a new study that analyzed ancient rocks from Greenland and Australia. The study suggests that Earth’s crust was shaped by extraterrestrial forces and that life may have originated from space.

The —That lucky survivor: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10 -> the "progenitor meteoroid was three orders of magnitude less massive (∼13 kg) than any previously observed carbonaceous fall. The Winchcombe meteorite survived entry because it was exposed to a very low peak atmospheric dynamic pressure (∼0.6 MPa) due to a fortuitous combination of entry parameters, notably low velocity (13.9 km s−1)."

A common way to identify meteorites -- testing a specimen with a magnet -- destroys information about that meteorite's history.

' Vervelidou hopes that raising awareness will help convince hunters, collectors, and researchers to give up a technique that’s still promoted by the U.S. Geological Survey, universities, and popular meteorite hunting TV shows... “Why would you buy an amazing painting and then throw some sauce on it?”
