Weather predictions have improved a lot in my lifetime, but for the last few days NYC has been in a weather system where the near term rainfall predictions have been useless. Not for the first time, to put it mildly.

The underlying models must generate confidence intervals, right? Why are they unavailable to the general public? Or am I missing something?

The difference between the weather & the climate is that the latter is the average weather over some time.

For example, we say & experience that some climates are hotter because they have *been" relatively hotter, , on average, than the average weather pattern in cooler locations, on average.

Unfortunately, there isn't much sign that your average politician or business person understands the climate. So, try to inform them of the

Budapest, 1978. August 20th is Hungary's National Day. It is usually marked with a large and specatular firework display in Budapest attended by huge crowds. Except last year when the display was cancelled due to storms being forecast to hit the capital. The storms missed Budapest, but that didn't stop the the head of National Meteorological Service from being fired. Typical of life in Orbánistan.

😂 Here I am, entering an equation for the Monin-Obukov length (a turbulence parameter) into , and SymPy is like: No! 😂

WTF is happening here? Vars are just symbols with positive=True and real=True, except for L_MO and F_H which have positive=False.

Interestingly, if I constrain F_H to positive, the equation stays an equation and is not just False. 🤔

EDIT: Aaah, positive=False means *negative* 🤦 SymPy did its job! 👍 Describing problems helps! 😃

So, Dora in the East pacific just crossed the international dateline, and promptly became Dora, complete with its own number (8).

question: if it returns back to become a hurricane again, then crosses back west once again, does it keep its current number 8 or does it get a new number? I'm guessing it keeps it but I'm not sure.
