A new study shows that volcanism 56 million years ago released more methane than previously thought, and that methane emissions from hydrothermal vents were responsible for global warming about 55 million years ago. The vents were active in very shallow water depth or even above sea level, which would have allowed much larger amounts of methane to enter the atmosphere. eurasiareview.com/06082023-pas

RT @MethaneData
There's been a dearth of data on from Africa’s offshore oil and gas sector for decades.

IMEO is changing that with a new study conducted with @DLR_en that charts how much methane is spilling from wells off the coast of Angola and Gabon.

To illustrate the error inherent in including natural in calculations...

Consider that 1/3 of all come from . svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/5054

CO2 drawn down by photosynthesis and stored in plant material is going to return to the atmosphere via decomposition - be it land, stomach, or wetland processes.

Should we consider a developer's plan to destroy a wetland carbon negative because of methane? that would obviously be ridiculous

Satellites now play a crucial role in our understanding of what is causing CO2 & CH4 to rise.

Analysing satellite data for last year the team at Kayrros (kayrros.com) identified 1,005 CH4 super-emitter events in 2022, of which 559 were from oil and gas fields, 105 from coalmines, and 340 from waste sites, such as landfills.

These are pictured.

: It would take less than 3% of ’s profits to clean up

"There is just no excuse" for the rise in methane emissions, IEA director says.

Emily Pontecorvo

75% of energy-related methane emissions can be eliminated with available technologies at a cost of ~$100 billion. That’s less than 3% of oil & gas profits last year. Producers could capture & sell methane. About 17% of US emissions could be reduced at no net cost.

AAAS: "Global alarm system watches for methane superemitters" Methane is sometimes considered a stealth greenhouse, escaping unpredictably from gas fields, pipelines, + end-use applicance. Now large, even short-lived leaks can be detected automatically, from space, anywhere in the world — with an eye toward plugging them + slowing climate change. "New technique, which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to scan through the 12 million daily observations collected by a European satellite, could aid future efforts to spot plumes in data collected by satellites, such as the International Methane Emissions Observatory announced in 2021 by the United Nations." The preprint of the article arrived late last month, in 1 of my favorite journals, Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, which now is posting weekly results on its website. "Last month alone, they detected 192 methane plumes—some persistent, some intermittent—with an emissions rate greater than 10 tons per hour, concentrated in Asia but popping up on every continent except Antarctica." Since 2006, methane levels in the atmosphere have grown 7%, + the gas is the culprit for approximately 1/3 of the 1.2ºC warming since preindustrial times. More satellites are on the way, including 'Carbon Mapper, a $100 million project that later this year will launch a pair of satellites.' But be aware of "distributed sources, including tropical wetlands, which could be emitting more methane in response to warming."
