A thing I can never remember about English, but might now because I am writing this down, is that a thousand kilograms is a tonne. A ton, on the other hand, can be short or long, one is more than a tonne and while the other is less.

People talk about imperial units as if it is a system. It is not. It is just a collection of random measurements, some of which share a name but might not share a value.

This is more of a repository, but it is one I am quite happy with. The idea behind this was a set of improvements to the , mostly by adding more , including both and . It expands from the unit to include units such as Megameter, Gigameter, Terameter, etc. and Mebimeter, Gibimeter, Tibimeter, etc.

I figured out the following:

Earth's rotation is at 11.57 μHz. (microhertz)
Earth's orbit is at roughly 31.69 nHz. (nanohertz)

Lately I've been replacing old with LED models.

I was pleased to see that there's now some reasonable standardization to describe their bases: the Edison screw bases common in North America are called candelabra, intermediate, medium, and mogul, with diameters of roughly 0.5-, 0.75-, 1.0-, and 1.5-inch (respectively), and new identifiers E12, E17, E26, and E39 (respectively) based on their diameters in millimeters. Hooray, score one for the !

Then there's the parameter for the bulb shape and size. I've been taught that the "A" stands for "arbitrary", which is the shape of light bulb that was efficient to produce and I was raised with. Europeans follow the letter with the widest diameter in mm, so their most common bulb style would be A60.

But here in the good ol' US of A, we call that an A19. Why? because that's the diameter in eighths of an inch.

Yes, in the USA, that common light bulb is an E26 A19, mixing metric with cursed fractional Imperial units.

While studying the of the order of genes on , I computed numbers such as ”25 changes per megabase per million year”. To be closer to units and use only one I considered changing it to “800 changes per base per ”, but it makes no sense because no genome has a length of 1 base and the Universe is younger than 1 exasecond. So maybe “800 attochanges per base per second”?

Amending my list of things to do with a time machine - go back to when they were defining the length of the standard foot and get them to make it slightly longer by a precise amount.

Imagine the crisis of faith those Metric people would have had when they measured the speed of light and realized it was exactly 1 billion feet per second. The realization of what they could have had if they hadn't decided to base their system on the nebulous girth of an oblate planet...

@Jdreben is to like is to . It's too late and it's unnecessary. Due to the underlying profit motive, it's also probably cumbersome. In other words, it's like a massive, self-interested world power introducing for measurement in a world where the is already well entrenched with a claim that "diversity in standards" is useful.

Which, of course, is one of the reasons the rest of us can't have nice things.
