The ajolote (Ambystoma mexicanum, from Nahuatl “āxōlōt” or “water monster”) is an endangered type of salamander, native only to lakes and water canals in the Valley of #Mexico (Mexico City). This species is becoming rare in the wild (where it normally has a dark or brownish color) but popular in captivity (the pink variety). The #ajolote is being studied due to its astonishing regeneration capabilities, since it can regrow entire limbs and appendages.
