The ajolote (Ambystoma mexicanum, from Nahuatl “āxōlōt” or “water monster”) is an endangered type of salamander, native only to lakes and water canals in the Valley of (Mexico City). This species is becoming rare in the wild (where it normally has a dark or brownish color) but popular in captivity (the pink variety). The is being studied due to its astonishing regeneration capabilities, since it can regrow entire limbs and appendages.
