Now, let’s go back in time, way back! In 1976 Joni Mitchell—one of the greatest ever who started out as a folk musician, but early on embarked on journeys through various musical genres—performed with a jazz band comprising guitarist Pat Metheny, keyboardist Lyle Mays, bassist Jaco Pastorius, saxophonist Michael Brecker, and drummer/percussionist Don Alias.

The show was filmed and released as a double LP and film with the title “Shadows and Light”; here’s the first song after the intro, “In France They Kiss on Main Street”:

@danapriesing @saxophone Yes. He was everywhere. I was fortunate enough to play with him in College, and he was like the coolest guy. So nice. He had just gotten off a "redeye", and was going over some charts, and was making mistakes left and right. He'd do this head tilt when he messed up, but his "messups" were fucking genius though... #michaelbrecker

I STILL think Michael Brecker #michaelbrecker #brecker still has never been surpassed in his mastery of the Electronic Wind Instrument #ewi.

This video, from the late 80s, is still a masterclass on it. He effortlessly uses sounds, split points on the #ewi and effects pedals to a degree I've never seen anyone else do.

Me seeing him as a young kid in 1988ish at the Shoreline, I had no idea who he was. (I came for Spyo Gyra) but after Brecker everyone sucked.
