On this day 101 years ago, Michael Collins was killed in an ambush in Béal na Bláth.
Born in 1890, he appears in the 1901 Census as a 10 year old scholar.

Michael Collins died on 22 August 1922 in an ambush at Béal na Bláth, County Cork. After his death Collins lay in state for three days. Tens of thousands of mourners filed past his coffin to pay their respects, including many British soldiers departing Ireland who had fought against him. Some 500,000 people attended his funeral mass in Dublin, almost one fifth of the country's population at that time.

Neil Armstrong becomes first man to walk on the Moon at 02:56 UTC (10:56PM EDT) July 21, 1969.

I was at Camp Durant the week of Apollo 11 in 1969. The Boy Scout Camp had no TVs or radios. I had decided to smuggle my 13" Motorola Cadet B&W to camp that year.

On 29th June 1922 Michael Collins sent a telegram to Winston Churchill begging for more military aid to fight the IRA, complaining he was promised 'two hundred rounds of high explosives' from the British to use against the anti-Treaty Irish Republican Army.

Briscoe was active in the IRA and Sinn Féin during the Irish War of Independence. He spoke for the Sinn Féin cause at public meetings there and was adamant that being a "Hebrew" did not lessen his Irishness. Briscoe was sent by Michael Collins to Germany in 1919 to be the chief agent for procuring arms for the IRA. After independence he was a TD in the Oireachtas for 38 years. 2/2

Robert Emmet Briscoe died on 29 May 1969. He was a son of Abraham Briscoe and Ida Yoedicke, both of whom were Lithuanian-Jewish immigrants. The original family name in Lithuania is believed to have been Cherrick or Chasen. His brother Wolfe Tone Briscoe was named after Theobald Wolfe Tone. 1/2
