It's Thacher era Northern Ireland- kids are getting shot in the head w/plastic bullets. Bobby Sands, an IRA commanding officer in Her Majesty's Maze Prison, decides to go on the 2nd hunger strike to a certain death, in protest of IRA prisoners being treated like common criminals. He dies of starvation after 66 days. 9 others thereafter. #Hunger opens with a prison guard w/bloody knuckle preparing to leave for work, checking underneath his car for bombs, etc. It's dehumanizing. The film is anchored by a powerful 20 minute uncut static wide shot of Sands & a priest right in the middle. They talk about the pros & cons of starving oneself to death. The priest finds him a focused, immovable rock. Zero sentimentalism & its beaugly cinematography helps, a lot. #MichaelFassbender's portrayal of a man of conviction is quite astonishing. Whether you agree w/IRA's tactics to achieve their political aim, one can't take away Sands' conviction in his beliefs. And that's beautiful. #SteveMcQueen #IRA

It is revealed in Q & A after the show that Arnold didn't give actors the whole script. She fed them little by little on short notice and also a lot was improvised. Indeed, Fish Tank doesn't feel premeditated. The film is both raw and delicate in its presentation and performances. Katie Jarvis's Mia acts tough and is childish. Not posted for agreement, if you share from my post please leave my commentary intact … you know the drill.

The thrust of the article seems to be that the foolishness and total lack of relatability on the part of pretty much all characters makes sense in the light of Scott’s message and vision for the movie. Making me not care about anyone played by Rapace and Fassbender, IMO two of the finest actors in the field, is an impressive trick, but he pulled it off!

In short: I recognize Scott had his vision. But given that it’s a stupid-ass vision, I’ve elected to ignore it.
