1997.

Acabo de cumplir diecisiete años y soy muy #duranie. Tampoco conozco mucho más, ya que las descargas por internet aún no han aparecido y me tengo que conformar con lo que me llega a través de mi hermano, aunque empiezo a comprarme algún disco con lo ahorrado de haber trabajado por primera vez durante el verano. No es mucho porque fueron dos meses como aprendiz y un tercio se lo doy a mi madre para ayudar en casa, a escondidas de mi padre porque se acaban de separar y las cosas no van muy bien, pero, eligiendo muy mucho, puedo hacerme con algún disco. Aún no me he enganchado al #Britpop, así que voy a lo seguro y grupos como #Oasis, #Blur, #Mansun o #KulaShaker tienen que esperar.

"Lo seguro" pegó un petardazo cuatro años antes con #OrdinaryWorld, pero dos años después perdió fuerza con un disco de versiones y para 1997 estaba todo un poco en el aire. Empezaron bien con #OutOfMyMind, metiéndola en la #BSO de #ElSanto (#ValKilmer y #ElizabethSue) y anunciándola como la nueva Ordinary World.

Que yo recuerde, eso de anunciar un tema como "el nuevo OW" lo han hecho por lo menos un par de veces más y siempre con el mismo (erótico) resultado: un #flop. Han tardado quince años, pero ya han aprendido.

Al final, número 21 en UK y dos semanas en listas. Poco para ellos y para un temazo así. Hay quien lo justifica con que, al tener que publicarlo #Virgin en lugar de #EMI por estar en la BSO, no hubo acuerdo y no se promocionó lo suficiente. Una pena.

Llega octubre y anuncian un tema muy "tecno" y bailable: #ElectricBarbarella. Me mola, le pongo por teléfono el estribillo a un (poco interesado) amigo. "¡Esto va a triunfar!".

No se edita en Europa. Tampoco el álbum. Solo #EEUU o #Brasil reciben copias. Allí, además, las tiendas se niegan a promocionar el disco porque resulta que Electric Barbarella es el primer single de la historia en venderse como descarga por internet. ¡Ni siquiera existe el #MP3!

Duran Duran rescinde su contrato con EMI. Ya está, no hay banda (spoiler: no).

A mí me parece un disco magnífico, con muy buenos temas, buenos singles y muy buena producción. Después sabría que favoritos como #MidnightSun o #SoLongSuicide en versión demo eran aún mejores temas, pero la sobreproducción es un mal endémico en este grupo. La última de ellas no ha sido nunca tocada en vivo porque #Simon, el cantante, se niega a ello. Era muy amigo de #MichaelHutchence, genial líder de #INXS, que se quitó la vida justo al mes de publicarse este disco, y no es plan de ponerse a cantar sobre suicidios.

El álbum comienza con el tema que da título al disco y que, como suponía, es una canción ambiental que sirve para dar la bienvenida a esa tierra rara de Medazza y en la que "canta" #Nick, el teclista.

No quiero ir tema por tema porque me estoy alargando, pero hay un par de canciones en las que protestan un poco por su nuevo status de banda de poco éxito y atacada por la prensa. "But why do we still face the music?" se preguntan en el último tema. En otro tema le lanzan un par de puyitas a #John, el bajista, por dejar la banda justo antes de este disco ("Can't say that I was surprised when you broke the ties - they were hanging by a thread").

Todo ello aderezado de un sonido distinto a lo que nos tenían acostumbrados y que se parecía más a su primera etapa que al rollito acústico de los primeros 90, pero con #triphop.

En su día me compré el CD americano, pero me ofrecieron el japonés por 5000 pts (30€) y revendí aquel con dificultad para comprarme este porque venía un tema más, la letra y un resumen de la trayectoria de la banda... En japonés cerrao. Aún lo tengo. La única canción que han dejado sin publicar es la cara B #SinnerOrSaint, muy cañera y que bien merece otra oportunidad.

Esta edición viene en doble LP rosa fucsia (le va mucho a esta banda) a 45 rpm y, aunque preferiría tener solo un disco, la experiencia de escucha no se ve demasiado resentida y la división en cuatro caras queda bien.

Trae el libreto del CD en formato enorme y glorioso, si bien se ve que la ampliación difumina un poco la imagen, que pierde lustre, aunque el recargadísimo diseño parece en ocasiones hecho con #MSPaint. Cometen el error de meterlo junto con el primer disco, con lo que arruga la funda antipolvo y la carpeta se da de sí, obligándome a echar loctite para arreglarlo nada más recibirlo.

Bueno, para mí un disco muy influyente y que disfruté mucho durante muchos años y otra vez ahora. Lamento el ladrillo y solo espero haberos descubierto algo nuevo si conocéis la banda.

Michael Hutchence was a born front man and rock star. He was such an enigmatic and electric performer on stage, and I loved that dude’s voice ever since my older teenage sisters introduced me to the band in the #80s.
Kick is STILL such a great record.
I appreciated the band trying to soldier on after Michael’s death, but cmon, man.
It just wasn’t the same.
