Mickey Spillane’s 1964 novel The Snake is a sequel to The Girl Hunters and you absolutely must read The Girl Hunters first. This is a very different Mike Hammer - older, wiser and sadder. Both books are great, but read the earlier books first.

Mickey Spillane’s 1967 spy thriller The Delta Factor. A thief is forced to do a job for the government, breaking a scientist out of an impregnable 17th century fortress. He also wants revenge. Fun, and more lighthearted than his Hammer books.

Michael Dirda in the WashPost: 9 strangely wonderful books
The 9 #books reviewed include two on #Greek #mythology, a biography of #Poe, an analysis of #MickeySpillane's novels, a memoir about crayon manufacturing, a collection of letters from #HPLovecraft, an anthology inspired by #JulesVerne, and a collection of parodies of the #poem "Mary Had a Little Lamb".
"Here’s the appropriately macabre opening of Coleridge’s “The Crime of the Urchin Mary”: “It was an ancient crone who wrote / Silly rhymes for tots / Was stopped by a maid in a pinafore / With blood-red polkadots.” That last phrase delivers the true Gothic shiver."

Time To Prey, an enjoyable 1960 entry in Frank Kane’s long-running Johnny Liddell PI thriller series. A pretty girl passes a letter to Johnny and then gets murdered.
Johnny Liddell is a Mike Hammer clone, but more cold-blooded and less ethical. But Kane is just not in Spillane's league as a writer.

Day of the Guns, first of Mickey Spillane’s four Tiger Mann espionage thrillers written 1964-1966.
Not surprisingly the formula is not all that different from Spillane’s Mike Hammer novels. There’s plenty of sex and violence. Tiger Mann resembles Mike Hammer in that he gets personally involved in a case and the case quickly becomes a kind of one-man crusade.
Great fun.

From 1947 to 1952 Mickey Spillane wrote six hugely successful Mike Hammer PI novels. A break followed before the series resumed with The Girl Hunters in 1962.
As the novel opens Mike is lying drunk in a gutter. He’s been lying drunk in gutters for seven years since his last case went sour.
This is not typical Spillane. It's great, but read the earlier books first.
