This week in California history: the preliminary hearing for Dorothea Puente was well underway in 1990. This pic shows 6th graders peering into the hearing. (Sacramento Bee, 4/26/1990)

Gotta be a bad omen to have a WWII bomb drop onto your patio and yet it’s what happened in Lakewood, CA on New Years Day 1984. Luckily it was unarmed but questions remain. (Modesto Bee 1/4/1984)

Robert Lenox wrote a letter in 1822, mentioning Timothy Pickering as a possible candidate to be a director of a bank.

Timothy Pickering? Wait, is that the same guy I remember from Garry Wills's book on TJ, JA, and slavery that @CPostel once assigned my M.A. class many years ago?

Sure enough, it was! Pickering died in 1829.

He had some cred if I recall.

I've always kind of enjoyed ; I'd love to find a computer output microfiche device (print to fiche) but they're rare and expensive :(
I have some documentation on fiche, electronic circuit references and science magazine 82-93 or something like that lol. I have a portable viewer in addition to the one in the workshop lol. There's something about analog high density storage and the 'archive feel' that my brain likes I guess.

@badrihippo @kytta @kai It’s interesting to look at how docs are archived at the Library of Congress and at Standford University’s archives: . And no, they are not obsolete. The decision to stick w/microfiche is based on the fact that film outlasts all forms of digital media w/tolerance for harsh conditions like mold, damp, & being dropped.

I like this. I was a microfiche geek when I was an adolescent.

I spent many an hour spooling through those reels of film in various libraries. To me it was like unlocking the secrets of the past.

My favorite was reading world newspapers from my date of birth.
