I’ve been implementing some #microfrontend recently. It’s been challenging and fun adapting it to existing React.js apps. One thing that is immediately apparent: it has the same trade offs as micro services. If you run a small team, don’t bother. The operationally complexity will destroy your team.

Trying to make some sense of module federation. How does it handle multiple versions of libraries?

E.g. feature-a uses design-system@1.0.0 and feature-b uses design-system@2.0.0?

If you create a component with a vision that it's going to be shared in other apps and then call it a #microfrontend architecture then you are wrong. Microfrontend means you create segments of your page and each segment is delivered by individual teams. Amazon's homepage is a great example here, the list of products is delivered by the products team, and the offers banner is delivered by the marketing team. Your segments should reflect your bounded contexts. #domaindrivendesign

I write #software for http://indeed.com (job search site) (previously employed by Amazon). I've written a lot of #database-backed #webservices in #Java, but in the last few years, I've been working on #microfrontend platforms in #JavaScript & #TypeScript, primarily supporting #React. I have more knowledge about #Webpack #ModuleFederation than anyone should be cursed with. I'd love to try #SolidJS, #RustLang seems really cool, and I'm excited about the future of #WebAssembly.

#microfrontend #webpack 5 has #federated modules. With a single spa using dynamic remote modules the container application can use many micro apps without having to update when they push new code. Very exciting. For legacy applications there are other strategies and you can mix and match to unify your scattered applications around your organization. "Micro Frontends In Action" by Michael Geers documents some of these, but Webpack's federated models are fairly new.
