Monika reluctantly followed Kristofel into the strangely fragrant house in the middle of the wood. Once inside, she noticed little faces in the unpainted walls, grotesque faces with mouths the color of the raw wood and with wood knots for eyes. Monika felt a thrumming in her neck and ears.

“I wish I had never adopted you,” whispered an old woman in Gerta's ear while she sat on the wooden bench before her mother’s grave. She felt her mother’s hand on her shoulder, its roughness as it snagged her blouse. She smelled the sickly sweet fragrance of her rotting flesh.
