@sysop408 @ash663 It's just poor engineering. Implementing limits in the backend but not adapting your frontend - that's the level of high school students trying to change production. Again - this shows me that does . Not even a gradual rollout.

"Micromanagement is fundamentally incompatible with psychological safety. And without psychological safety, teams don’t innovate, learn from their mistakes, or grow in ability."

Have you ever been micromanaged? It's awful.

I've been talking to a lot of people recently about micromanagement, so I became curious about its relationship to psychological safety. (Spoiler: they are not compatible)

And I was left with the big question -- if micromanagement is so toxic, then why is it so widespread? And what's do be done about it? Here's the piece I wrote.

In modern times, it’s natural to want to control the world around us. Too often this extends to controlling our employees. Don’t do that. You’re doing more harm than good.

I can’t describe to you how draining it is to be micromanaged by someone with a wholly different approach to work. I’m sure working with me under these circumstances has felt like pulling teeth. I think there’s a good reason for it feeling that way.

The first thing I would like to share here is: when you evaluate your subordinate or a team member as not capable to handle some new area of responsibility or to do a part of work, think of how they would become able to do that if nobody allows them mastering that.

I dedicate this blog to business analysis, product ownership and delivery management in software engineering.

Interesting take from "industry leaders" (in Australia):

Talk to them about censorship and employee control.

Their answer: "finds this funny"
...

Don't present yourself as part of the solution when you're actually part of the (core of) the problem...

When a software delivery group is forced to estimate tasks, this tends to trap them in an environment of obligation without responsibility. And often the person demanding these estimates finds themself in the very same trap.

Who will free them? or will they be forced to take the (often) significant risk of breaking free?

takes away ownership from people’s work, rendering them inert, and bereft of accountability for it. We then pretend to wonder why people are uninspired, unmotivated and unengaged ❎

robs people of ownership of their work, and leaves the bereft of accountability. Then, managers wonder why there's no initiative, engagement, or creativity in their teams.🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

@gossithedog Maybe a dumb question… But if he is so much into , shouldn’t he have looked into that tiny winy map before he did what he did in the last days? I mean… We are just moments away from a nuclear meltdown. If I would be still working there I would demand either a hefty pay raise (like double or triple) or get the f*** out as fast as I could, before I‘m asked to pour sand over the molten core with my bare hands. I would choose the front door… Good lord!

@basic70 @jasongorman The "jira the tech debt" approach has known flaws discussed elsewhere, which can in fact be reduced to, in cases, "the problem that your boss won't give you the time for refactoring"

@jasongorman Ah, but if every PR requires a Jira , then do you make a big PR containing feature and refactoring, or do you make a separate Jira for the refactoring PR?
