@fzer0 Ja.

I don't think he is any unique savior. Post.News is already doing this, just as one example.

Not to mention advertising-based publishing is soon threatened by big upcoming changes in search.
forbes.com/sites/mattnovak/202

I actually DO think this is a big issue, I just think inflating Musk's already bloated ego by suggesting he is somehow showing the way or saving the day is not a good approach to talking about it. It sidetracks into hot button personality issues and misses the ubiquity of the scope and the number of other players exploring this.

See also some notes (at links below) that I wrote at post.news before I stopped blogging there about a different way to think about micropayments. (TL;DR Direct pay per article in advance is problematic. I'd rather pay ahead into a pool that later gets divvied out by formula tracking my use frequency and my decisions to highlight articles I ended up valuing.)

See "On the Managing of Micropayments" by me on Post at post.news/@/kentpitman/2JbqCKu
and, in particular, the included post "A vision of Post subscriptions" by me on Post at post.news/@/kentpitman/2JYjq2h

Has anyone thought about using for projects? This would take power away from Google because it's not ad-based. It reduces the 'friction' of paying for software. Imagine a paid option on Arduino/Github where a library would charge you a few cents to clone/use it. I would happily pay that to support the developers. It could provide substantial revenue for popular projects. There are still risks of clones/piracy, but it's a start. Certainly better than a worthless 'star' 🤬

Update: Coil has discontinued its browser extension-based micro-payments subscription service. I have no doubt its poor transparency regarding where your money went contributed to the service’s demise. 💸

@da 🤔 Coil’s privacy by design meant it could not tell you who you sent payments to. It functioned as a wallet with payouts sent to creators’ wallets as you encountered them in your browser. It used the federated Interledger payment network. Both of these were very good improvements over the original Flattr model. There was an additional add-on for client side tracking if you really wanted to know.

@Jeremiah I’m not surprised to hear that Coil is shutting down. They failed to — nay, refused to — answer the crucial question, “where did my money go?” If only Flattr had kept their better and more transparent browser-based alternative alive ... .

I am trying to find out more about good ways to use to fund the artists and writers and web services I like and use. I'm also trying to learn more about the ideas behind which micropayments methods will be most sustainable and fair. Will government need to be involved? Or just businesses/nonprofits? Or all? Any tips are welcome ...

I'm curious about user behavior re the use of for

Do you only (usually) use the same brand to pay recipients using the same eWallet?

Does that even matter where you're from? Feel free to elaborate by adding a reply.

In the , for example, people usually pay to Gcash / or to Maya because of zero transaction fees. A transaction with another wallet (e.g. Maya to Gcash) may cause a few extra bucks - which adds up, if you use it a lot.

Many publishers (including Popula) would love to offer this, and have been working on it for years. However, money transfers of small amounts are still impractical, because the payment processing costs per transaction are more than the small fee we'd charge.

Crypto and blockchain have a bad rap right now, but the technology solves for this problem. Patiently waiting for the furore to die down so we can get on with it.
