Started #3dprinting the PiAutoStage, an auto slide scanner you can attach to any normal #microscope stage in graphene. I have to say, this filament prints so nicely and way smoother than my budget tinkering PLA! I don't know why I put it off this long.

Taking a break from rebuilding the #OlympusBH #microscope - this evening I'm making a filter holder for the polarising filter.
Might need to re-think this - it's probably more suitable as a general light filter holder. While the handle makes it easy to insert and remove, it also limits the rotation.
The original is completely round - but obviously slightly bigger than my 23mm OD filter holder, which tried to fall into the light tube...! (oops)

Fixing the gummed up microscope stage next. I'm leaving the head until last because frankly I'm scared of accidentally damaging the optics.
Problem with this one? Solidified grease in the coaxial knob assembly.

Cleaning the dirty old grease out of the focus mechanism on the microscope base. Thankfully the BHM mechanism seems much simpler than the BHTU in Carl Hunsinger's videos.
Remove trim. Remove slide block. Remove ball bearings and bearing races. Clean off grease, re grease. A 50/50 acetone and isopropyl mix in a Gu pudding pot is great for getting the old grease off the BBs and stopping them from escaping.

@ottiswimmers I haven't tried this yet, but there is a recent biorxiv paper on a DIY #lightsheet #microscope that uses a FLIR Grasshopper 3. They have controller code on github too, designed to run on an Nvidia Jetson Nano, I assume that would be running Linux.

@Star_Geezer My daughter asked me to describe what a rotifer is. I told her it's like a legless tardigrade (she knows what a moss piglet is) that grabs stuff with its butt and has twin spinning rotary blades of death on it's head. She IMMEDIATELY demanded that we look at one (which we did!). She loved it!
