Memories are important.

Air rising in thick, glassy waves up from the bone white gravel roads. Dark emerald grass and weeds give way to fields of black soil. The smell of rain forever on the wind. The smell of life, death, rebirth.

Season upon season, year upon year. The history of a place carried upon the wind, cut into the earth, pressed into your memory.

This is why art is so important.

With a few words, brush strokes, notes, a photograph, you can take a memory and press it into someone else.

That is why we must protect art. Teach it. Make it. Share it.

Share your memories. They are important, you are important.

I believe most people are good, but also that the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

My hometown died. It actually died multiple times. Once during the farm crisis, then in 2008, then meth moved in, finally the opioid crisis took everything that was left.

I know a lot of people are starting to see the fraying edges now. The slow creeping rot. It's scary when things start to fall apart. It's reasonable to be afraid of what could happen. Could your home die the same way mine did?

It might, but it probably won't. Here's why.

My home died because the systems and people put in place to protect it failed. At every level leadership and money exploited the people and bled the town dry. Business left, services broke down, and people just left the town to rot.

Then something happened.

The people started to take care of each other. Churches served meals, people bought back the homes and started fixing them. Small businesses started up. The town came back from the dead.

Does the town still have problems, yes many. Is it starting to grow back as a community, yes. It will grow into something new.

The moral of this story is build and strengthen your communities now so you don't have to go through these cycles of suffering. There is a better life for all of us out there if we work together.
