Been sick all week. But I managed to finish reading Mike Duncan’s Storm Before the Storm. It’s a fascinating look at the troubles of the end of the Roman Republic. The violent breakdown of the government process and rise of populist leaders and factionalism.

A good read. Highly recommended.

“Though a man like Marius used populare rhetoric to fuel his political rise, he also burned to be accepted by the nobility, to be recognized as their equal. Saturninus, on the other hand, was a bomb-thrower. Like many popular revolutions in history, the men who unlock the door are not always the same men who come bursting through.”
—Mike Duncan, The Storm Before the Storm

Not at all relevant to the modern grand old fascist party.

Mike Duncan's Revolutions podcast has been a constant for me since 2013. It's a wonderful history podcast that delves deep into revolutions from the English to the Russian Revolution. Before that, his History of Rome was a delight. Listening to the last episode today was tough. I will miss Mike's insights and exhaustive research. Mike's admission to being brought left by the work was heartening.

Anyone else been following Mike Duncan's "Revolutions" podcast? It's about to come to a conclusion but it's worth finding & listening to if you're into , especially political history. Mike also did a podcast called "The History of Rome."
