Mike Hodges was a criminally underrated film director and particularly masterful with neo-noir offerings like CROUPIER, I'LL SLEEP WHEN I'M DEAD, and the underrated BLACK RAINBOW. And there were classics like GET CARTER and PULP. The weird thing was how Hodges was more associated with FLASH GORDON than any of these gritty cinematic offerings, which were as genuinely great as Jacques Tourneur and Aldrich at their best!

There's a pivotal scene in Get Carter where Jack Carter sits in bed watching a porno and he's weeping because he's realised the reluctant girl in the film is his teenage niece. It drives him to seek revenge on the people involved.

Years ago when ITV showed this, they cut the porno footage (which showed no porn anyway) so all we got was Michael Caine crying as he looked at a flickering wall.

The Bristol-born film / TV director, screenwriter, playwright and novelist had a truly eclectic screen career, including seminal British gangster movie Get Carter (1971), unloved but brilliant Michael Crichton adaptation The Terminal Man (1974), the initial incarnation of Damien: Omen II (1978) and the sublime Flash Gordon (1980).

Bit of a kick in guts to hear of the passing of Mike Hodges. A genre hoper and a genius storyteller. From the grit of Get Carter, to the camp of Flash Gordon, to the hilariously underrated Morons From Outer Space (it should have been box office big!). He was a real personal favourite and inspiration of mine. RIP Mike.
