2/ We've been planting native milkweed all over the yard (even transplanted some destined for destruction nearby). After three years we've seen a slight increase in monarch butterflies, but tonight was the first time we had ever seen a caterpillar (and dozens of eggs on the same plant).
I also noticed earlier in the day that the elderberries (which didn't fruit last year) were ripe enough for picking.

This full-grown caterpillar is about to pupate. It is feeding on honeyvine milkweed (Cynanchum laeve) and doing a U-turn.

Traffic jam on the Common Milkweed! I found this whole field of blooming Common Milkweed on the Delaware River Trail, just south of Washington Avenue Green. There were *loads* of butterflies everywhere, not just monarchs but everything from little skippers and azures to swallowtails. Plus tons of native bees. Amazing! I felt like I'd died and gone to butterfly heaven.

A monarch butterfly from this afternoon, resting on the milkweed along with some of the debris from last night’s storms. (We got off lightly—the street flooded during the worst of it, but the water went right back down, and we didn’t even lose power.)

A pair of red milkweed beetles (Tetraopes tetrophthalmus) mating beneath a milkweed leaf. I wonder whether that’s a jealous rival whose leg and antenna are peeking over the edge!
(Both genus and species name mean “four eyes,” which is because the antennae actually divide each compound eye in half!)
