#Metals 1.0.1 with #Mill BSP is still doing way too much on the Mill repo just to get a reasonable #Scala editing experience. Maybe, our repo is a bit uncommon, as all integration tests and examples end up in separate executable sub-modules, and in some cases (integration tests) lots of modules need to be locally published, but that should not be necessary just to edit the sources. Investigating...

This mill in Wassenaar – outside The Hague – grinds grain to make flour.

It has 3 volunteer millers, and they continually watch the weather to ensure the arms are pointed in the right direction and to keep it from running amok.

At the #Etruria #mill, a (1) boiler powers a (2) steam engine that runs (3) gears that run (4) grinders, to make ground flint and bone for England's bone #china industry. This mill ran for centuries, until 2014. It's white powdered output (ground flint and bone), used by companies like #Wedgewood and #Spode used to make their custom-recipe clay, was moved by boat on the Trent & Mersey #canal.

Today in Labor History July 3, 1835: 2000 children, mostly Irish and female, went on strike at the silk mills of Paterson, N.J., for an 11-hour day and 6-day week. They were currently being forced to work 13 hours per day Monday through Saturday, and were regularly fined for minor disciplinary infractions. Solidarity by workers in neighboring cities, including financial support from New York and Newark, helped sustain the strike for two weeks. However, the bosses eventually won the strike, but did offer a compromise of a 69-hour work week. And strike leaders, and their families, were permanently barred from future employment in Paterson.

I first covered the #local grains movement in 2017, when I visited a restored PA grist #mill for a story for Civil Eats. Since then, the push to revive these systems + the infrastructure to support them has only accelerated + as I discovered in this new story for FoodPrint, on the East + West coasts (+ in plenty of places in between) local grains are going strong. https://foodprint.org/blog/movement-to-revive-local-grains/
