I've heard conflicting explanations of the divide between #GenX and #Millenial persons. The one I personally subscribe to is if under normal circumstances you would be scheduled to graduate high school prior to Y2K, you're GenX; which would mean 1980-1981.

I saw #TheWorstPersonInTheWorld last night and did *not* expect it to have such an impact on me. For some reason it's categorised as a romcom when it really is so much more than that. Instantly one of my favourite films of the pst yers, and imo the quintessential film about the #millenial experience.

If it were up to me, there would be lessons in school on #culture. It bothers me that people think that Americans have no culture when we are such a bastion of #media. To act like these pieces of #art hold no value, or that they do not contribute to our internal #conversations, is to forget what culture really is. These lessons on culture, I think, would bring about an awakening that the literary lenses we were taught to use in school are still frameworks that we can apply to art that we ingest on a regular basis, and should.

There is also a lot to the icons of American cultural history that move in the fields of things like #Black history, #LGBT history, and movements that indicate resistance and representation. These things are to be extoled as part of the conversation we had to have as a nation, oftentimes fueled by culture, in everything from #rhetoric to portrayals on the silver screen and beyond.

This is not an attempt to say that all culture generated by Americans is necessarily #American culture, but many of the things that they create are informed by an internal conversation which can be analyzed and taught. Not only do I think that that would be a major draw for students, but I think it would also enable students to think about how art in our country is a part of our #identity, and our influence upon the world as a result of our art is non-trivial. I think that taking this view is an important part of opening up conversation and having people more invested in it from the outset.

It is not enough, in my view, to only engage in critical thinking. There must be an application of that thinking to the conversations we're having as a nation. The number of people of the #millenial generation, such as myself, that do not engage in the conversation, I would argue, is far too high. As a result, they are inadvertently allowing themselves to be spoken for. I think culture is a huge part of how people should get invested and be invested.
