Fragments of big ones examples are usually isolated plates, but here is a 42cm monster from Schneider et al (2010, black and white), and a ~75 cm bit of one from Davies et al (2021, colour). We also know they got big from their trackways. For a long time we were not sure if these creatures were . Nowadays most people accept they are. So, why did they get so big? We often highlight the large amounts of Oxygen in the atmosphere at this time in Earth history as a cause.

A lovely millipede, which I think is the Orange Rosary Millipede (Helicorthomorpha holstii), spotted at Thomson Nature Park, Singapore, on 28 March 2023.

It was fast moving, so I thought it was a centipede until I had time to see the two pair of legs per segment, and realized it was a millipede.

Some of ya'll struggle with romance. Here are some tips. When you meet her she will probably be curled up. Like you, her response to *most* new things is to curl up in a ball and wait for it to stop or go away. You are a "new thing." What you need to do is sing her a little song so she knows you are also a pill millipede just like her. Then she'll uncurl.

The sounds are called stridulations made by rubbing parts of the exoskeleton together. "cricricricricri"

in other news, found bristly millipedes (Polyxenida) and snout mites (Bdellidae) on my building's garden wall and was, unfortunately, very weird about it just as neighbours were coming home

oh how I wish
for the great diplopodes
of carboniferous swamps
with thousands of feet
on the detritus of trees
they would calmly feast
those ancient millipedes

Here's the whole millipede from the preceding post. It's headed away from us (they always are!) so we can't see its face.

When they're on their feet, these guys are always in motion. When they feel threatened they curl into a spiral with their legs on the inside.

What you might see when riding a millipede as it zips across the forest floor.

We have a lot of these in our yard. They sometimes get into the kitchen, where they're chased by curious cats.

humblebrag: looked under a chip of rock and saw two tiny yellow-beige dots that in shape reminded me of aphid fundatrices (though much tinier). Hit 'em with the 24x macro clip-on and discovered they were tiny baby bristle millipedes (order Polyxenida)!!!

Lucky enough to see a pair of native Tasmanian millipedes feasting on this beautiful fungi.

I don't know the species of millipede, but they're definitely from the Amastigogonus family. Likewise, I don't know the fungi as I'm not a mushy specialist, but I'd guess some sort of bolete?

This was on a walk at Hollybank Forest near Launceston, Tasmania.

Millipedes aren’t everyone’s cup of tea but for me they’re cute and sweet, just don’t drop them or scare them. Lol

The final pic relating to this slime mold scene is of a bristly millipede (Polyxenus lagurus, I think), a group I had never heard of before. They have detachable rear bristles that apparently function like grappling hooks and can be deployed against ants and spiders. Details of that in linked paper if you need more.

Bushwalkers accidentally discover Australia's first known bioluminescent millipedes

Scott Kemp first saw glow-in-the-dark millipedes in the Illawarra 18 years ago, but he had no idea he was making a significant scientific discovery.
