Lovely to see the red poll in #MillMeadows on #TodaysWalk. There is always (?) one that is curious, or perhaps 'on watch', she's on the very left of the picture. So the others can simply keep grazing without worrying about the collie coming up from the woods. He would love to have a go at moving them around the field!
Wet grass, glinting in the bright sunlight, and dry paths on a warm autumnal morning. The last of the mist is evoporating, it is only detectable in long views. #TodaysWalk in #MillMeadows. Part of this broom has been all but wrapped by a spider or spiders.
In #MillMeadows for #TodaysWalk I spotted these bushes. There are blackberries and rose hips, but with the sun, or me, in the wrong place, the fruits are not as cleanse as they should be. It is definitely harvest time now.
Somewhere in there is a rowan tree, with plenty of berries. It's another sign of harvest. I hadn't even spotted it in #MillMeadows until today. #TodaysWalk
On #TodaysWalk in #MillMeadows we spotted this. It looks like is has been eaten. However, if I have identified it correctly - Gilded Brittlegill, it may just have been knocked.
I've been looking for a decent thistle as we are in that season, but I'm too late for this one. The others I have seen are scrawny, it's not been a good year for them around here. #TodaysWalk #MillMeadows
Small copper butterflies and bumble bees on this bramble patch, which has ripe fruit (not reachable by me), fresh flowers and all stages in between. #TodaysWalk #MillMeadows
The clouds are really moving, so the drizzle will soon stop. #TodaysWalk #MillMeadows. But, the sun was not visible for ages, then not for long. A typical July day in the UK.
On #TodaysWalk in #MillMeadows I wondered about these (this?) fungi making steps up a presumably dead fallen tree. Why are they only there? Why do they appear to form steps? How do they manage to grow exactly level?
#TodaysWalk #MillMeadows This patch of weed is normally glorious, and visible from well across the field. This year it has almost disappeared, so sad. I hope the dry spell is over soon - even if it ruins my holidays.
Realising I hadn't taken a picture as I was about to leave #MillMeadows, I took a shot of the trees in the top field. These trees, standing well apart, are lovely and I could have watched the effects of the wind for longer. #TodaysWalk
A bramble patch in full bloom, attracting lots of bees in #MillMeadows on #TodaysWalk. I'm looking forward to September when the blackberries will be available, if I dare to get close enough.
The butterfly stayed on the leaf motionless for a long time, while I got the camera ready, zoomed in, and found it again. Then the wings were folded, then the shutter opened and closed. #TodaysWalk #MillMeadows
It's a while since I photographed the red poll. Here they are relaxing on a cooler day, just one or two still eating. They make a great addition to #MillMeadows, but we take an alternative path with the dogs, so we do not have to meet them when the dogs are present. #TodaysWalk
The rambling rose bushes are in full bloom, some white flowers and others with a subtle pink tinge. Don't go too close, the thorns are lethal. #MillMeadows #TodaysWalk
On a hot sunny day, I watched the squirrels. They ran a bit, stopped, ate, ran a bit, etc. I was far enough not to disturb them, and far enough not to get a reasonable picture. This is the best one of about 10 attempts. At one point there were two normal size ones (adults) and a small one (kitten? ) apparently in a family group, I did not think squirrels operated in family groups. #MillMeadows #TodaysWalk
The ferns in this part of #MillMeadows are now nearly shoulder height (I'm about 6', 1.82m), they make the path feel isolated, but I'm just tall enough to see the dogs at the bottom of the incline. #TodaysWalk
The path through this long ago coppiced patch of woodland was particularly beautiful in the bright sun light on #TodaysWalk in #MillMeadows. The thin tall trunks give the wood a closed-in feel, but there is also the space highlighted by the sun.
A few small leaves on an apparently dead trunk, so I assume there is a seed growing under the bark somewhere. I wonder how far it can get, growing on slowly rotting wood? #TodaysWalk #MillMeadows
Small patches of something like fungus on this tree (I think it's an apple tree). I wonder what impact it has on the tree or the fruit? #TodaysWalk #MillMeadows
