Fantastic disguise (mimicry).
"The new beetle species (Austrospirachtha carrijoi)—found beneath the soil in Australia’s Northern Territory—emulates a termite by enlarging its abdomen, a phenomenon known as physogastry. Evolution has reshaped this body part into a highly realistic replica of a termite (as seen above), head and all, which rides on top of the rest of the beetle’s body."

It looks like Sara. It moves and sits and smiles like her—it even has her annoying laugh down pat. Its mimicry might have gone unnoticed, but its eyes gave it away, reflecting the light like a deer.
We also found Sara upstairs, throat slit.
We’re not sure what to do with it now.

Check out this spider!
Or, no, wait, it's really a moth!
Too late, it's flown away.
It's a small thistle moth, which I found on a Scotch thistle plant at the Muriwai o Whata Bioblitz this past weekend.

Mischievous starling playing siren in my back yard, trying to lure me out by alternately imitating white-crowned sparrows, ruby-crowned kinglets, and other enticing birds. (E needn't have resorted to tricks--I love em in eir own right.)

Is it a wasp! No, it's a robber fly pretending to be a wasp.
This is the NZ endemic species, Saropogon antipodus (it has no common name). This is the first one I've seen.
A student on our recent ecology field trip found it on the floor of the Boyle Outdoor Education Centre, and thought it was a wasp (mimicry successful!).
There are 52 observations so far on #iNaturalist and this is the first from the Southern Alps.

“You are indeed a master of mimicry, Lady X,” the Duke whispers in your ear, “your false face is near flawless. But you’ve been careless. If you'll look to your left…”
Another mimic, wearing your face—your true face—passes by. Smiles at you. Hand-in-hand with Tess, who doesn't recognize you, of course.
“Your sister is the original, be assured,” the Duke says. “Come along quietly now, or else she might have an unfortunate accident.”

"Good morning, Popo," David said, as she came out to the bridge.
"Hey! I'm Sisi!" Popo said.
David just grinned and tousled her hair.
"Why would you even sssay that?" Sssindy said, flicking her tongue. "Even I can tell you're Popo."
"Yeah, but how can *he* tell? I thought my #mimicry was perfect!"
"Maybe you should try 'mumucry'," David laughed.
"What?" Mumu said.
Popo stomped away angrily.

"I no like it, please no," he parroted back at her, scornfully accented words dripping with venom. Well, today his #mimicry would be his undoing, she thought, revealing a ceremonial candle from behind her back as the demon A'Nogh L'aighkheetp L'iisnogh made himself known.

Masters of mimicry, Lithops (‘Living Stones’) is a genus of succulent plants in the ice plant family, Aizoaceae, native to southern Africa. Their resemblance to stones is widely accepted as being the result of natural selection, and has evolved to deceive hungry herbivores…
Obviously much more pronounced in the wild, their deception is most effective. An example below (one of mine).
Lithops karasmontana subsp. eberlanzii
