#Anthracite is the hardest and cleanest-burning type of #coal. It’s also the most expensive, meaning it was usually reserved for home #stoves and #heating; not power generation. Because of its high heat content, it was formerly used in blast furnaces, but has been replaced by metallurgical coke which has greater room for oxygen penetration, which anthracite is too dense for. It is also hard to ignite.
This #mace #photograph of the surface of the #mineral show it begins to cleave along flat plains, making it clear that anthracite is an intermediate stage between bituminous coal and graphite.
There are also yellow, #sulfurous inclusions on the surface.
