I’m not sure that I entirely agree with this book but it is a good overview of how to conduct a career driven #jobSearch and translating #academic training into industry #careers. Basalla & Debelius (2015) https://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/S/bo19503047.html #miniBookReview

At some point most of us want to run off and join the 'circus'. Opt out of mainstream and wrap ourselves in the Alternative. Some folks actually do this! How do these alternative communities practice their principles? What does this look like in a sustained larger community of people? What binds them together? Schelly tries to tackle these questions in Dwelling in Resistance: Living with Alternative Technologies in America (2017) https://www.rutgersuniversitypress.org/dwelling-in-resistance/9780813586502 #miniBookReview #GoodReads #Sustainability

Parable of Sower by Octavia Butler came highly recommended and did not disappoint. Set in ~2024 this novel written in the early 1990's sees a dystopian future that feels like a near alternative timeline. Privatization of everything, drug-fueled destruction, and community building. https://www.grandcentralpublishing.com/titles/octavia-e-butler/parable-of-the-sower/9781538732182/ #MiniBookReview
I got to admit, Ostrom keeps disappointing me with her later work. This collection of essays on “Knowledge as a Commons” were techno-solution oriented with minimal acknowledgment of social or cultural considerations beyond “Yes they exist!“. If you are interested in early ’00s technophile solutions, this could be interesting to you. Otherwise go spend your time elsewhere. https://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262516037/understanding-knowledge-as-a-commons/ #MiniBookReview
Excellent book on how data has been used in good and bad ways to inform policy. Notable cases studies include air quality in the Beijing olympics, NYC incarceration rates, and mathematics of lotto in poor communities.
