Do people studying and doing mathematics still use and for stats and algebra respectively?

The two maths modules I'm studying this year use them quite a bit and I'm trying to get a sense of how out of date the programme is or isn't :)

My latest post - OC Curve and Reliability/Confidence Sample Sizes:

I have had a lot of feedback on one of my earlier posts on OC curves and how one can use it to generate a reliability/confidence statement based on sample size, n and rejects, c. This post is mostly geared towards giving an overview of using OC curves to generate reliability/confidence values and using Minitab to do the same.

What software to use for data analysis? seems to be dominant in and where many standard packages are available to support biological data analysis. I first learned about in biology. Despite ventures into I have gradually migrated to preferring its syntax. packages have expanded enormously pypi.org/ making it as useful. There is no competition: choose what is best for your project.
