@stefano I grew up with #Unix and had my first own experiences in the 1980s with #MINIX on an ATARI ST, #SINIX (Siemens #Unix derivat), and with #HPUX, #Solaris and #IRIX at the university.

#FreeBSD is my favourite #BSD (server) OS. I use it mainly because of its versatility. My use cases are firewalls, containerisation via #jails and VMs via #bhyve.

As desktop and mobile OSes I use the Apple #Unix derivates.

I frequented #SoftproBooks often, a great #bookstore devoted to computers and technology located in the Denver Tech Center, Colorado (near I-25 & Arapahoe Rd). It sold BSD and Linux collection distros in CD/DVD format (imagine three audio CD cases sandwiched together).

But let's not conflate. "Free" only ever referred to #Berkeley UNIX - not AT&T, not #SunOS, #Solaris, #SCO UNIX, or Microsoft Xenix. GNU tools, certainly, yes, and Linux... well of course, #GNU GPL2-only license.

I personally don't mean specifically #Linux when I say #UNIX, but Linux is one of the Unices and I include as part of that OS family - just like #MINIX, #Pick, and a few others that may or may not be free in some form.

I recently watched the attached video. Professor #Tanenbaum is undoubtedly a man of great expertise. In the reimplementation of #Minix 3, he says he chose code based on #BSD (not #Linux) because the code is of superior quality. If Professor Tanenbaum says so...

You're probably using it.

@kkarhan Personally I just think that using #BSD, #MIT or #X11 licenses is a good way to end up like #MINIX (used for pervasive #proprietary malware) or #CoreJS (no money & used as a pillar of the corpo-backed ecosystem), but strictly-speaking they cover all of the four #FreeSoftware freedoms so they're Free Software as far as I'm concerned (not #copyleft but that's a distinct thing).

CC-BY-NC-SA does have restrictions that mean the four freedoms aren't intact, so it's something else.
