People will often share on social media because they get attention and social rewards for doing so. However, this study rewarded participants for sharing true information instead and they shared more accurate information after. Incentives matter! @psychology @sociology @communicationscholars

People often share on social media because they develop a habit from the attention & social reward they receive from doing so. However, this study finds people will share true information more frequently when they are rewarded. Incentives matter!

Teaching people about common techniques that spread misinformation can help them become less susceptible to misinformation. Additionally, when people learn these techniques, they are more likely to talk about them with others, which can bolster the lessons they learned as well.
