In the discourse about internet misinformation there's surprisingly very rarely any discussion of the nature of misinformation before the internet. I'm not an expert in it, but it strikes me that it's probably absolutely crucial to understanding why and in what ways misinformation is worse now.

Watching the Spy Balloon discourse is a classic case of Risk Amplification

Media coverage of a single event ignited substantial public interest in the issue by narratively framing:
The dread of stolen nuclear site info
The blame of government not doing enough sooner
The certainty that it was Chinese aggression

From the initial event, there is now ongoing interest in watching the skies for 'proof' of organised irresponsibility
