'We should aim at getting an understanding of a country [New Guinea], especially its women...The study of the contributions of the Pacific countries to our culture would be a contribution to peace- teaching tolerance and understanding.'- 1950, Country Women's Association (VIC).

Absolutely thrilled to be working for the Pacfic Manuscripts Bureau at @Library_Vic today to locate women in the collection. First up, Mrs. Taber. And, what's this? A New England Microfilming Project?

How curious.

Is it a book cover? A postcard? A colonial report? No! This scene of women is an excerpt from a celebratory menu regarding the Federation of Australia in 1901. You can read more about its value and materials at www.colourfulhistories.com

From the Archive of the Archivist: Mount Wilson, ‘Where the cow bells ring’.

This map is a worthy item for researchers to examine should they be concerned with Australian mythology, fantastical cartographic representations, cartography, poetry, Australian artists, flora and fauna, and the local history of NSW.

It always amazes and delights me when a pattern begins to show across, supposedly, disconnected archives.

L: An article by Sarah Chinnery for the Country Women's Association (Vic) member magazine.
R: Phyllis Mander-Jones collection, holiday journal.

Both 1930s. Both focused on the actions of women. There's a research thread forming here, I just know it!

Time in the @statelibrarynsw
library recently prompted me to ask how a library can change. How did Mander-Jones use the Mitchell library space? What drove her to create an exhibition?

Hmm, what to do with some hours on a dreary Monday morning? I know! Transcribe from the @statelibrarynsw archive of Phyllis Mander-Jones' unpublished play 'Library Lunacies or the Library Assistant's Dream' (1932).

Now I just need some actors...

Once again, the availability of microfilmed Pacific records, this time from the Pacific Manuscript Bureau, in the State Library of Victoria ensures I will continue to champion this headache-inducing format without restraint.

Phyllis Mander-Jones was born 12 years after the Proclamation of New Guinea & grew alongside the Commonwealth.

How did these events shape her professional life? Was she fascinated by the Pacific or Empire, or something else?

Phyllis Mander-Jones spent so much time in the Pacific Islands & with Pacific records, but there's only one instance where she produced Island centric records. Why? Perhaps the papers of one of her trainers at the State Library of New South Wales, Ida Lesson, will have answers.

From what looks to be a school notebook c1911-1913 from Phyllis Mander-Jones this we have a brief tribute to the animals' nighttime wanderings. This archive shows PMJ wrote poetry from her teens until late 40s.

Did you see a historian quietly happy dancing in Special Collections at @statelibrarynsw yesterday? If so, hello! I'd just seen this letter from the LMS missionary, Will Saville, to his brother, Alfred. See that return address? An indication of how PMJ came to holiday in Mailu.

Mander-Jones liked to create drafts-for articles, reviews, diaries and exhibition catalogs. Lucky for researchers they're archived at the State Library of New South Wales.

Sorting through PMJ drafts like this indicates how her travel diaries were created

Also, it's reassuring; even the greats edit

Time to breakout . I'll be spending the next few weeks at the Mitchell Library (Sydney) learning about 20C Australians in the Pacific. You can follow my adventures and enthusiasm for all things GLAM at www.colourfulhistories.com

This was all made possible thanks to a Currey Fellowship.

My second-hand Herschel is getting a little rusty after being a catchall for Honours and . But I reckon it's good enough to get me started on this next research adventure.

One of the highlights from the CWA Annual Reports, targeted advertisements! Source: CWA Victoria AR, 1935-1936.

I'm concentrating on Aus-Pacific relations, but there is so much material for in these records. Environmental, health, local, rural, Art&Craft.

*screams in historian*

Seriously, it's wonderful to see the Australian government active in the Pacific, but there is far, far more to talk about than the often repeated lines about WW2 and security. Healthcare. Economic development. Education. Women's rights. Colonialism and neocolonialism.

Isn't it interesting where curiosity can take you? Tomorrow, I'm visiting the State Library of Victoria to learn more about the Country Women's Association in Victoria. This board shows they're more than fundraisers with biscuits and scones.

My findings will appear on www.colourfulhistories.com later this month!

Always nice when a book review query brings my attention to an article I missed at its release date: 'A glass ceiling smashed? Reflecting on gender equity in the discipline of history', Karen Downing, via Australian History Journal www-tandfonline-com.ezproxy-f.
