@samgai I thought it was something to do with the need to synchronise timetables for the newly invented railways. Mr Stephenson Rocket carefully wrote down the time at Greenwich and drove his train all over the country to tell postmasters what time it was. Unfortunately, his journey was delayed by the need to climb down and construct the tracks, and so 12 noon is at different times in different places. Hence #timezones.

At least, that's what my teacher, #MissInformation, taught me.
