Planing is Underway for NASA Next Big Flagship Space Telescope

With JWST in space, and Nancy Grace Roman nearing its launch date, scientists and engineers are starting to discuss what comes next: the Habitable Worlds Observatory. This next-generation space telescope will probably be the same size as JWST, but carry a suite of instruments that'll let it directly observe the atmospheres of Earth-sized worlds orbiting Sunlike stars in the habitable zone. Researchers are still working out their science objectives for the mission, but if all goes well, it'll launch in the late 2030s or early 2040s.

The PLATO Mission Could be the Most Successful Planet Hunter Ever

The European Space Agency's PLATO mission is due for launch in 2026 and consists of 26 separate telescopes measuring 20 cm across. They will form the equivalent of a 1-meter mirror, scanning a field of view 10,000 times larger than the full Moon. Like TESS, it'll survey the brightest stars in the sky, watching for transiting exoplanets. A new study suggests that PLATO could turn up tens of thousands of planets, including at least 500 Earth-sized worlds and dozens in the habitable zone.

I've just binge-watched all three series of this mostly French language sci-fi series "Missions" on BBC iPlayer. I found it under BBC4. Absolutely hooked. Great tense (and satisfying) ending with lots of twists and turns that lasts the entire third series. Very creative. Acting is great, characters are super. I won't say anything about the plot - you have to watch it 🙂

Reading an article today on the 6-tonne Juice spacecraft and it's ambitious 12-year voyage to observe Jupiter and three of its moons.
