Mountain snowpack supplying the #MissouriRiver Basin was near average on March 1. The amount of water stored in the river's six reservoirs was 46.0 MAF, below the flood control zone which starts at 56.1 MAF. There is enough water in the river for water supply needs, despite the low runoff totals and ongoing #water conservation measures.

The Northern Plains and Rocky Mountains have received a lot of snow, with much of the runoff expected to replenish the soil profile after #drought. Consequently, the runoff forecast for the Upper #MissouriRiver basin is for below-average runoff this year.

The low water level along the #MissouriRiver in the Kansas City area exposed an old #bison skull with horns that may be an extinct species of bison.

The Missouri River Basin has areas of intense #drought as precipitation in the last three years has been below normal for most of the region.
Above Sioux City, Iowa, precipitation has been mostly 20 to 60 inches in the last three years (upper right), or about 70% to 90% of normal (lower right).

The Upper Missouri River is being managed for low flows this winter as precipitation has been below normal, leading to low reservoirs. Although at present, the snowpack in some areas is high. The Army Corps of Engineers also manages for floods.
