Want backing vocals in your track? Want it to sound like a choir? When engineers record real choirs they typically use 2 mics at most. Simulate this by standing in different places away from the mic and recording those vocals.

It'll simulate the way vocalists individual voices interplay with a room's sound and the effect on their distance to the mic.

#MusicProduction tip of the day?

If you want a track to sound old, nostalgic, retro, you can use any old tape recorder. Old dictaphones are great for this

Take your track & add a sound at the very beginning of the stem (like a clap) as this will help you align later.

Press record on the tape first. Hold it by the speakers. Press play on a solo'd track. Rerecord the line out or use a mic on the internal speaker for more grunge!

#MusicProduction tip of the day?

Like the sound of a room or stairwell? Want to recreate that in your DAW? Take a recorder (can even be your phone for added effect), stand a few feet away from it and clap your hands as quick and loud as you can.

Now import that clap sound into a convolution reverb effect. It should give you a nice approximation.

For this song I needed to learn to compose midi against a hardware #synthesizer, within all of it’s early 90s limits. The same Roland SC-55 is well know for game tracks like Doom, Descent and many adventure games.

The music you’re hearing came out from my own SC-55MkII and I also learned the painstaking process of #mixing and #mastering the raw output of the synth for something a bit more refined, applying also a bit of reverb to bring it all together.
