Magnitude 2.04 double star (with the fainter star Alcor) located 83 light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major. Mizar is the middle star in the "handle" of the Big Dipper. Mizar and Alcor were used as a test of vision for young men entering the army in ancient Athens and Sparta.
