It's a brand-new semester, and it's time to take on emerging technologies in the library profession! I've got some articles coming up on the topic of tech in libraries, so keep an eye out.

Libraries need to become visible leaders like never before. The "library [must become] visible [this] is essential to cementing a positive future" (Ojala, 2022). But the social harms caused by the big tech companies "are an intrinsic part of how these companies operate, a natural consequence of the rationality—at heart a colonial rationality now applied within both Global North and Global South, that underlies their business model" (Magalhaes & Couldry, 2021, p. 357)

Magalhaes, J. C., & Couldry, N. (2021). Giving by Taking Away: Big Tech, Data Colonialism, and the Reconfiguration of Social Good. International Journal of Communication (Online), 343–363.
Ojala, M. (2022). Contemplating the Future for Libraries and Librarians. Online Searcher, 46(4), 4–4.

Trying to find only research articles (or review essays) is an interesting puzzle.

As others have mentioned, checking with an academic librarian for a curated list, and conducting boolean searches, are great starting points.

Some journals publish literature reviews (we don't, specifically, though we do publish evidence summaries of specific research articles).

However, there are some really cool tools you can use to improve the chances of finding things!

ResearchRabbit and Connected Papers allow you to find work that is connected, in some way, to a work that you specify - could be same author, same field, cited by, etc.

2Dsearch can be helpful, especially for anyone not used to boolean searching.

One of our biggest goals is to build communities! We want to improve the public's understanding of how research works -- how to conduct it, to parse meaning from it, and how to understand the processes that can sway meaning one way or another.

We also want to establish that research can do real good in the world! One example we're very proud of is our data-based adoption of a gender-neutral language policy to build a more inclusive research environment: scholarworks.sjsu.edu/ischools

Hello Fediverse! We're the Student Research Journal out of San Jose State's iSchool, and our whole team is excited to join the interoperable web!

We are a double-blind, peer-reviewed journal developed and led by current graduate students at San Jose State University's School of information. Our goal is threefold: to empower budding researchers, to publish relevant content of the highest quality, and to build an international community of student researchers.

The peer review process is rigorous, but it's also an amazing opportunity to get feedback on your work from experienced editors. We'll work with you to polish your manuscript into its best possible form.

If you're interested in submitting your work to the SRJ, check out our website for more information.

This fall, I had the privilege of processing a collection belonging to Vermont resident and brevetted Civil War major, Charles G. Gould at the Silver Special Collections library at UVM. Old Chuck (and the amazingly gracious team at UVM!) taught me a ton about this work, this field, and (most importantly) how cool it feels to tell people you spent the day hanging out with swords.

They say you never forget your first...
