Having trouble remembering the difference between the flag of Belgium and the flag of Germany?
Remember this simple rhyme:
“Black touches Red, you’re in Germany like Kaiser Fred¹.
Black touches yellow, you’re in Belgium, so have a waffle with marshmallow².”³
¹This assumes that you know that Kaiser Frederick III was the second Emperor of Germany.
²This is only a slant rhyme, and it barely works since — while dessert waffles are associated with Belgium, and they would be pretty good with marshmallows on them — marshmallows are not particularly associated with Belgian waffles.
³Yes, I am not particularly good at coming up with mnemonics.

here are my horrible esoteric #mnemonics for #Greek:
1) αγόρι (agori) = boy; I remember an example in my syntax class with the phrase O Petros agorase = Peter bought. Agorase sounds like agori, Peter is a boy, therefore agori means boy.
2) κορίτσι (koritsi) = girl; this sounds like корица (koritsa) which means cinnamon in Russian. Cinnamon is sweet and spice-y, just like girls are expected to be.
leftist means government, and government means criminal

Wing: ស្លាប
#Khmer #Cambodia #PhnomPenh #Mnemonics #Language
ស្លាប means wing, of a plane, of a bird, or even of a fan blade!
You can eat chicken wings, ញុាំស្លបមាន់ but be careful with the spelling and pronunciation of the word ស្លាប because whilst ស្លាបមាន់ is chicken wings, មាន់ស្លាប់ is dead chicken! (Tho មាន់ងាប់ is probably more correct, as whilst both ស្លាប់ and ងាប់ both mean to die, ងាប់ refers more specifically to animals)

Do you notice any similarities between the Khmer word for Sun, and the Khmer word for Sunday?
ប្រះ = Buddha / God / Celestial or Holy Being
ថ្ងៃ = Day
អាទិត្យ = Sun / Week
In my experience សប្តាហ៍ is more commonly used for "week" tho I have heard both in spoken Khmer.

Moon: ព្រះច័ន្ទ
#Khmer #Cambodia #PhnomPenh #Mnemonics #Language
There's several different ways to say moon, but ព្រះច័ន្ទ seems to be the most common, and is often heard in love songs.
An apparently more poetic alternative to ព្រះច័ន្ទ is ព្រះខែ, and given that ព្រះ translates to god, and ខែ to month, ព្រះខែ could be literally translated as the god of months, or month god.

Keeping with the Fortune Teller theme in my last post:
https://mstdn.social/@khmer/110585673959803896
A bit of a messy one, but this is the four elements. I have related them to their associated suite in a typical deck of playing cards, where:
Diamonds are Earth: ដី
Spades are Air/Wind: ខ្យល់
Hearts are Water: តឹក
Clubs are Fire: ភ្លើង

Not my best work as I can understand there being confusion with the translations here, but at least it's a four in one...

Another instance where I really need to figure out vowel and subconsonant kerning.
One translation of គ្រូទាយ is teacher of guesses, but the word ទាយ also means horoscope or forecast or prediction.

Both ស្អែក and ថ្ងៃស្អែក seem to be appropriate ways to refer to tomorrow. ថ្ងៃ is Day, and is used in the days of the week. For example:
Monday: ថ្ងៃច័ន្ទ
Tuesday: ថ្ងៃអង្គារ
Wednesday: ថ្ងៃពុធ
Thursday: ថ្ងៃព្រហស្បតិ៍
Friday: ថ្ងៃសុក្រ
